The book is divided into four parts. Part one presents the outline of TBLT. Part two takes a critical look at the literature on task-based language teaching. Part three brings together a range of issues relevant to effective TBLT. Part four gives pragmatic suggestions for the planning and implementation of TBLT.

The distinction between CLT and TBLT is important. CLT, with its emphasis on communicative activities and communicative outcomes, and its focus on the language use of the 'other',is sometimes alien to the TBLT approach in many languages. TBLT differs from CLT in that learning is not only about communication but that there is a clearly defined learning goal/outcome for each task. TBLT as a practice is more like CLT on the surface, but when examined more profoundly, its focus is primarily on the learner putting his or her cognitive, affective, and linguistic resources together in order to successfully accomplish tasks. Each task, together with a task strategy derived from the readings or presented in the unit, provides a specific context in which to apply the language. The 'cognitive' dimension comes from the examination of cognitive theories of language learning, especially the dual-coding theory of Krashen. The 'affective' dimension comes from the contrast between CLT and TBLT outlined by Graesser in Language Behaviour and Cognition. The 'linguistic' dimension comes from the contrast between TBLT and CLT outlined by Rod Ellis. In TBLT, the focus is not only on linguistic and cognitive skills, but is more how the learner puts his or her linguistic, cognitive and affective resources together in order to accomplish tasks.

The first two chapters deal with CLT and TBLT more generally and those chapters also help the reader to understand the substantial differences between the approaches. The chapter on 'Respecification and Residualization in CLT and TBLT' examines the philosophical basis of CLT and TBLT. It shows how the move towards CLT involved an abandonment of the PPP approach taken by CLT, whereas TBLT has made a conscious effort to recover much of the PPP approach. d2c66b5586
