Mary and her instructors were also super flexible about tailoring the curriculum to our needs. Experience levels ranged from basically never having crack climbed to being a 5.10 leader, and everyone got to focus on what they wanted to. I got to practice leading around my limit and taking my first whips on gear, and they were super patient with me throughout the whole process. They also checked in with each of us at the end of every day to make sure we were achieving our goals and working on the things that we were most interested in. By the end of the long weekend, most of us could barely walk (in a good way!).
These clinics are great for anyone with a general 5.9 fitness stoked on crack climbing! They are meant to take your trad/crack climbing to a whole new level. The clinic is led by AMGA single pitch Instructor and Assistant Rock Guide, Mary Eden. We will be keeping a low student-instructor ratio and have a professional photographer along for the entire clinic.
Day 1 we will meet and head to our 2WD group campsite and then off to our climbing destination! Will will camp together as a group each evening and climb together each day.During the clinics we will cover key concepts of crack climbing; fingers to fists, wide climbing technique, placing traditional climbing gear, tape gloves, leading, technical systems and much more.

This climbing clinic is open to adult climbers with significant climbing experience with a solid background in climbing safety systems who want to focus on improving their crack climbing technique. Lessons will primarily focus on climbing movement and developing specific crack climbing techniques in the finger, hand, fist, and offwidth sizes. Lessons will take place at various crags throughout the greater Vedauwoo area that allow for focusing on particular crack sizes, making for an excellent opportunity to explore and gain familiarity with this world class trad climbing area. All rental equipment equipment is included free of charge.
This clinic is open to adult climbers with prior outdoor climbing experience and a competent understanding of climbing safety systems who want to focus on improving their crack climbing technique. Due to the challenging nature of climbing in Vedauwoo, we recommend that participants have a good base of climbing fitness and have significant experience climbing outdoors at the 5.9 grade or harder.
It was more of an off width crack than a chimney down low, a bit awkward and strenuous for a 5.6 with a slightly bulge midway to work around. My BD #5 protected this well, and I pulled around the bulge to a ledge partway up and start of the much wider, more genuine chimney section.
There was excellent hands and feet and I slowly squirmed my way up, plugging a cam or two into the crack in the back, although the rock was a bit chossy and suspect for holding a fall. A few chokestones block easy exit at the top of the chimney, but some cord was hanging down to clip for easy protection for the final move, working out and around the lodged rocks to the notch between the summits. I was disappointed to find that the three bolt summit anchor had been reduced to one, with some cord wrapped around the wedged summit blocks for back up. I quickly scrambled to the summit to tag the highpoint, then dropped back to the notch to figure out an acceptable anchor.

The new, state-of-the-art nuclear submarine, Seaview, is on diving trials in the Arctic Ocean. Seaview is designed and built by scientist and engineering genius Admiral Harriman Nelson (USN-Ret). Captain Lee Crane is the submarine's Commanding Officer. One of the on-board observers is Dr. Susan Hiller, studying crew-related stress. The mission includes being out of radio contact for 96 hours while under the Arctic ice cap. The polar ice suddenly begins to crack and melt, with boulder-size pieces sinking into the ocean around the submerged submarine (no explanation is given as to why the ice sinks). Surfacing, they discover the sky is on fire. After rescuing scientist Miguel Alvarez and his dog at Ice Floe Delta, Seaview receives a radio message from Mission Director Inspector Bergan at the Bureau of Marine Exploration. He reports that a meteor shower has pierced the Van Allen radiation belt, causing it to catch on fire, resulting in a deadly increase in the global temperature. Nelson's on-board friend and scientist, retired Commodore Lucius Emery, concurs it is possible.

The presence of stress intensities above a critical value (KI > KIc) initiates fast catastrophic crack growth, followed by the deterioration of a dental or a body restoration machined from ceramics. The presence of stress intensities above a threshold value (KI > KI0) initiates SCCG in ceramics, followed by a slow, however continuous, erosion of the strength of a restoration which also may result in final fatigue. In an early stage of ceramic research it was believed that this lower limit for SCCG is very close to zero. In the mean time, however, one has learned that for most ceramic materials the lower limit for SCCG is significantly larger than zero. Indeed, it may even be just below KIc.
The threshold limit KI0 corresponds to a crack equilibrium at null crack velocity. Therefore, it allows a safety range of clinical use. The higher the value of KI0, the higher the reliability, and hence the lifetime of a restoration. Bio-components should be designed to work in a region of the v-KI-diagram where the upper border line of that region corresponds to the threshold limit.
In principle, the proper test for existence of a threshold lies in the observation of reversibility of crack growth. The threshold can be regarded as a Griffith quiescent point, where forward and backward fluctuations just balance, i.e., the mean velocity of the crack tip becomes zero. The forward and backward fluctuations take place over discrete energy barriers definable as G = W = 2γ, where G is the energy release rate, W is the Dupré work of adhesion, and γ is the surface energy. One common experimental method to determine the threshold limit is to measure slow crack growth rate down to velocities as low as 10-14 m/s. Then one can extrapolate from the vertical branch of the function to the zero velocity limit on the stress intensity factor axis KI, with the intersection KI equal to KI0 [4-7].
Another method uses a side grooved specimen with a crack propagating along its length, and under a bending condition similar to four point bending. The crack velocity can be obtained from the rate of load relaxation at constant displacement and the initial crack length.
