We report a numerical and experimental investigation of the flow field due to the pulsatile fluid flow field in the arteries of a human subject by solving the incompressible Navier-Stoke equation, provided by cardiovascular-dynamics software and used to model blood flow in the arterial system. This investigation was performed by simulating and then comparing the simulated and measured velocity patterns for six successive cardiac cycles for a single human subject. The present study extended earlier studies of the pulsatile flow field in arteries, in which steady-state flow profiles were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). For an effective deployment of the CFD-generated flow patterns as a tool for personalised medicine, it is important to understand the variability in human blood flow patterns. To achieve this goal, the present study compared the results of steady-state analysis and pulsatile analysis for the six representative cardiac cycles in one subject. The calculated velocity waveforms for all cycles matched the measured patterns well up to a certain degree of variation. The results of the comparative analysis showed that the five calculated partial amplitude flow rates for a single subject were in good agreement with the data measured by the Doppler ultrasound velocimetry method. The pulsatile flow field was investigated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation using the software, which has been validated and calibrated using flow measurements in a two-dimensional patient-specific arterial model. The cardiovascular-dynamics software is based on the model-free fluid dynamics approach and it does not require model input regarding the arterial geometry or behaviour of the arterial walls. This concept is based on the premise that the boundary value problem and the interior value problem are identical. Because the cardiovascular-dynamics software uses model-free methodology, it is versatile and has an ability to analyse both steady-state and pulsatile blood flow. Other approaches, such as steady-state modelling and CFD, which are based on continuum mechanics, require model input and do not have the ability to analyse pulsatile flow patterns and hence cannot be used to personalise medicine on an individual patient basis. d2c66b5586
