Transportation fatalities and injuries severely impact the quality of life in Indian country. Each year under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), as enacted by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Public Law 117-58), 4% of the available TTP funds are set aside to address transportation safety issues identified by federally recognized Indian tribes through a competitive, discretionary program. Projects are chosen whose outcomes will reduce fatal and serious injuries in transportation related incidents, such as motor vehicle crashes.
The FY2022-2026 TTP Safety Fund Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the TTP Safety Fund was published on June 7, 2022 and amended on January 9, 2023. Applications for the FY2023 funding cycle will be accepted through March 9, 2023.
Grant Awards from the 2022 Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund were announced February 2, 2023. Any projects not selected for funding under the FY2022 funding cycle will automatically be considered for funding in FY2023. Applicants with projects that were not selected can replace their 2022 application if updated information is available by following the application process for FY2023. Subsequent years will require a new application each year.

To ensure rapid, effective response to oil spills, the President has the authority to make available--without Congressional appropriation--up to $50 million each year to fund removal activities and initiate NRDAs. Funds not used in a fiscal year are available until expended. To the extent that $50 million is inadequate, the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 granted authority to advance up to $100 million from the Principal Fund to fund removal activities. Starting in Fiscal Year (FY) 2000, in response to large fluctuations in deposits, Congress placed a cap on funds available for distribution (also known as obligations). These annual caps were intended to maintain the Fund as a stable source of support for future victim services.
