Hack Old Mac Mini

There is, in fact, hope for users of many old Mac models. With a bit of effort, you can use a source-available, third-party utility that makes it possible for you to run the latest macOS version on significantly older hardware, with (for the most part) relatively minimal caveats.

The Mac Mini has been roughly the same size and shape for 12 years, as the current design was released in June 2010. However, despite being the same general form factor, the internals has shrunk over the years. [Snazzy Labs] took advantage of this to make a miniaturized Mac Mini.
With his mini Mac Mini board ready to go, he began designing a case to fit what was now a single-board computer. A fan of the channel offered a design reminiscent of the 2019 Mac Pro. Unfortunately, FDM printing struggled with the cheese-grater pattern, so [Snazzy Labs] printed it in resin with some mica powder. As a result, the mini mini looks fantastic while taking up just 28% of the volume of the original.
Mac Mini (stylized as Mac mini) is a small form factor desktop computer developed and marketed by Apple Inc. As of 2022[update], it is positioned between the consumer all-in-one iMac and the professional Mac Studio and Mac Pro as one of four current Mac desktop computers. Since launch, it has shipped without a display, keyboard, and mouse. The machine was initially branded as \"BYODKM\" (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse) as a strategic pitch to encourage users to switch from Windows and Linux computers.
The Mac Mini G4 has two USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 400 port. Networking is supported with 10/100 Ethernet and a 56k V.92 modem, while 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were additional, build-to-order options. External displays are supported via a DVI port, and adapters for VGA, S-Video, and composite video output were available. The system contains a built-in speaker and an 1/8-inch stereo mini jack for analog sound output. The new Wi-Fi card no longer used an MMCX-Female connector for the antenna, as do prior models, but rather a proprietary Apple one.[19]
The Intel-based Mac Mini includes four USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 400 port. The I/O ports were changed with the early 2009 revision, adding a fifth USB 2.0 and swapping the FireWire 400 port for a FireWire 800 port. An infrared receiver was added, allowing the use of an Apple Remote. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and 802.11g Wi-Fi became standard and the Ethernet port was upgraded to Gigabit. A built-in 56k modem was no longer available.[41] The 2009 models added 802.11 draft-n and later 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth was upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1. External displays are supported through a DVI port. The 2009 models have Mini-DVI and Mini DisplayPort video output, allowing the use of two displays. The Mini DisplayPort supports displays with a resolution up to 25601600, which allows use of the 30-inch Cinema Display. The Intel-based Mac Mini has separate Mini-TOSLINK/3.5 mm mini-jacks that support both analog audio input and output, and optical digital S/PDIF input and output.[42][43]
Pre-2009 models have a video connector that is compatible with DVI, HDMI (video only), SVGA, S-Video, and composite video with appropriate adapters; for audio output, it has both the analog mini-headphone port and a digital optical fiber port.[143] The addition of a HDMI port on the 2010 Mac Mini simplified connection to high-definition televisions and home theater AV receivers. The HDMI port supports video resolutions of up to 1080p and eight-channel, 24-bit audio at 192 kHz, and Dolby Surround 5.1 and stereo output. The 2014 model added 4K output, and the 2018 model supports Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and HDR10, and uses the macOS Catalina operating system.[61][93]
Having written this and noticing the silence in this thread, I would like to add, that I really don't want to discourage anybody trying this. I think, more has to happen, than my (and other's) naive efforts to get SL on this Mac Mini. Eventually, a hack will come out, or a system update will remedy the problems. I will keep my eyes open. As it stands, I assume it is o.k. to mark the question as answered (written one month later).
On another note, when i was loading SL onto the mini, performing system update and making sure it worked the display was my on my Macbook pro and it looked perfect. Not sure whats going on, but I wont stop till I fix this.
a few questions: have you checked performance with xbench or geekbench I also made the downgrade to 10.6.8 and got it running (although starting the process from an 2010iMac) and it works, but the mac mini is way to slow (xbench gives a result of ca. 70 - like an 7 yrs old mac) and geekbench-32 gives 1900 (SL) vs ca 6000 (Lion) - so for me it works but makes no sense.
I tried it on a 2.3Hz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor;2011 mac mini and it didn't work at all the computer wouldn't even recognize the external operating system strange writing came down the screen.
Well, I'm stumped. I have a new (Nov 2011) i5 mac mini, that is giving me #@*@ with its refusal to output 5.1 sound via HDMI, and so I tried to install SL to a spare firewire disk on the mini from a remote-mounted retail SL 10.6 DVD (part no mc2232Z/A). The SL installer won't run from the mini - says it needs a different version of the application.
Essentially you can replace the CPUs in the Macmini1,1 (2006) or Macmini2,1 (2007) models with any chip compatible with Intel Socket M, the highest spec model available being the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 Ghz T7600.
These great little machines can see more than 2Gb RAM once fitted with a Core2Duo, there is a hack to update the firmware of the Macmini1,1 to that of the Macmini 2.1. This allows the machine to see 3Gb RAM.
Mystifies me why anyone would want to do this. Running newer MacOS systems on Macs Apple classifies as \"vintage\" or \"obsolete.\" They ALWAYS, and I mean always, run poorly, sometimes terribly. I worked for an Apple VAR as a service writer (what Apple calls a genius, but no way I'd make that claim), and we got many people who wanted us to restore their old OS, which Apple does not make easy for consumers. (We had the means, and we charged $129 for it.)If you can't afford a new Mac, or iOS device, just keep the last authorized OS. If there's a feature you just must have, then bite the bullet and get a new model that can use it. Just a cautionary tale from someone who has seen what these hacks can do.
WOW !!! It really worked. Thanks a lot. The second option is the greatest. After deleting .AppleSetupDone, it allows you to create a new user with Administrative. This saved my day, otherwise I was trying with CMD +R and it was trying to bring new OS from net.
worked fast and flawlessly. ( just a side issue that it asks for keychain pass. when i input the pass for the old problem acct, it does not accept it. but you know what, everything else works except keychain.) thank you people that pioneer these hacks and work-arounds. so good the way you guide us where the cosporates fail to support us. thanks!
the grey one with with the around circle spinning as if something is happening in the background and ofcourse the apple logo. from there it does nothing. i left the machine on the all night thinking it will work in the morning for me to proceed to the screen where i can use the new account(administrator)
my administrator account stays logged in, so when i turn my computer on, it goes straight in. the problem is that i cannot download any softward becasue there is a password on the account. and i cant access it, i got my macbook OSX from my aunt that died and have no way to recover the password. do i have to log out of the account and then shut off the computer i tried the method and it didnt work for me so i was wondering if i need to just log out THEN shut down the computer and restart the process please i need this done ASAP!! 153554b96e
