The Sony PlayStation is a solidly built around a new architecture that they have already guided engineers to build: the Cell. What I'd like, and what I think RMS would like, are targetted applications that are free across Sony's devices. That would mean that Sony - and the RIAA - are getting fewer CDs out onto the shelf; and featuring 'natively' downloaded music would mean that recording companies don't have to include a free download to each CD that they give out.

And that's what they thought was going to happen. It was especially clear when they discussed the adoption of Trusted Computing. An organization with a clearly defined control-rein-command position started down the road of acceptance, and then led people toward wild over-the-top hypocrisy.

The industry's hullabaloo actually had an element of merits. They talked about providing 'certification' for 'certified devices'. If we had a meaningful technical solution to their security problem, they wouldn't have to resort to questionable proprietary measures to advertise... uh, well, the sort of thing you wouldn't want to advertise that you're doing.

It's unlikely that Microsoft and Apple will adopt such a solution. Apple is not under pressure from the big recording companies and so they don't need to. And Microsoft has their programming model locked down to such a degree that equivalent protection methods are still not possible.
