New Forms of Brass Band Music, by Ray Steadman-Allen was originally published in 1952. Ray Steadman-Allen was a British composer who was famous for his style of intricate, lush and undecipherable arrangements of hymn tunes. He would use anything he wanted for the composition of his arrangement, he would use a bagpipe for chorus, a jointed marimba for solos, or a xylophone. The New Forms of Brass Band Music book is now out of print, however the music is still used as part of courses at tertiary level music conservatories and universities in the UK and internationally.
The first British brass bands were coal miners' factory bands, introduced in the early 19th century, replaced by music halls sometime during the 1850s. The first reported concert by a "swell" brass band, probably the first-recorded band from Britain, was given at a public garden in 1845 at Stonebridge, Surrey. This was composed and directed by Arthur Anderson. For the first time, it is now possible to form a fully professional band of horns, basset horns and to sound like a full brass band. Since 1932, the brass band has been a normal institution in all British schools for boys and girls. The association of brass bands dates from the 1950s when the brass band movement was started by the Salvation Army and the Salvation Army continued to be important in the development of brass band music. The brass band is attracting a good deal of attention in both Britain and the United States.
There are currently more than 400 brass bands in the UK.[125] Brass band "fringe" activity includes brass band competitions, brass band festivals and lessons. In the United States, there is a large brass band scene with over 150 bands in the Unites States. There are high standards of brass band playing in both the UK and the US. The Brass Bands of America is the only amateur brass band organization in the world which represents both brass band players and arrangers. The organization's purpose is to promote brass band music and to improve the playing techniques of the band. d2c66b5586
