I think if I had to make one biological or philosophical point it would be that evolution should not be over-simplified. It is a wonderful theory and I believe that it is a good starting point for understanding the diversity and complexity of life. But, like a great theory, it is not the only way to understand life and it cannot be the only guiding principle to decide how one should act in one's life. I have been reading and re-reading Edward O. Wilson's Consilience and have been amazed by his ability to weave together, as one, a wide variety of complex ideas and topics. For instance, in the biography (by E. O. Wilson & Co) he writes about the utopianism of the Communist Party in Moscow during the 1950's. I'm not sure that I have seen or heard about a more humane way of being than in the USSR. For example, the hostility toward the West was not palpable. Kids could not play soccer; parents in the same family had to share bedrooms. But, the boy and girl were sent to the same school where they had friends and neighbors to play with. They weren't expected to speak English; they were assigned a tutor. Their work was not expected to be creatively done by hand. They were expected to take meticulous care of their clothes and toys. And, they were expected to be good little workers. So, I wouldn't want my children to be raised anywhere else. Whether we choose to look at the world through the lens of Darwin or through that of the more recent theories of co-evolution and the social and cultural complexities of the world is up to each of us and our children. In the end, choosing a pathway may not be the most important decision because the process of life is one of trial and error, of learning to deal with the choices we make and the consequences of them. And, our choices are far more limited when we are too tired or too busy to read a bit of fine print before making a decision on the auto-pilot of a computer. A good example of that is the one where the parents of the child who died in the crosswalk were reprimanded for allowing their son to cross the street on the green light. The parents should have realized that the boy crossed the street when there were cars coming toward him, and the light was green.
I would like to hear what his response to the producer's suggestion will be. I'm thinking I'll email the show and ask this. My husband is taking my son tonight to the theater where one of the high schoolers will be speaking to the audience. I'll find out tomorrow if that student is the one whose father was on the show.
The other interesting thing about this approach is that it will give the film a different dynamic than the original. The original was set in a world where there was no cure, with the future being bleak and the human race dying off. I Am Legend 2 will allow the story to follow a new set of characters while remaining within the same universe. 827ec27edc
