Yesterday I downloaded the standalone converter from filehorse.com and converted my old XP system to a VM. I will find out if it works in a few hours when the copy is done. I followed the instructions here: -your-existing-windows-xp-system-into-a-virtual-machine/ and so far so good. I also found out that even though my XP system is old, the latest converter still worked.

You will need to unzip the files that are downloaded from Cloudera to extract the .vmx and .vmdk files to a network share or put them on the same server where you install vmware converter. Either way will work.

Do I need to also download VMware ESXi or Server to generate a virtual image of my laptop using VMware converter standalone? I read the documentation for those products briefly and they seem to be unrelated to the simple task that I'm trying to do which is to hot-clone a linux laptop. If I get one of these other programs, do they then need to run on another machine on the local network? I tried installing the VMware server on another computer on my local network, but it told me I had to first uninstall the player, so I didn't go any further.
I'm trying to copy a live Centos 5 system to a new ESX environment in order to upgrade it. I'm using ESXi 6.0.0 and the standalone converter 6.0.0 build=2716716. I create the job to copy the system, and it runs a while and then fails with the message A General System error occurred: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
Can someone point me to a reference that lists each of the major versions of the VMWare Converter that prepares standalone virtual machines for use in VMWare Workstation? I see now a product that is a "VCenter" converter, and I'm not clear on whether this is a name change, or if this is in fact a separate product. 2b1af7f3a8
